How To Use Client Choices And Optional Budget Lines

The easiest way to understand Client Choices and Optional budget lines is within the context of a scenario.

In our scenario, let's pretend we are creating a specification for a kitchen sink. We want to provide our clients with:

  • The choice between a budget, standard, or high-end single hole faucet.
  • The option to include a garbage disposal.
  • The option of a counter-mount soap dispenser with a choice in color.

The scenario above allows us to cover the following choice configurations:

Configuration Description
Choices The faucet covers the scenario where a client selection must be made, but alternative options are available.
Options The garbage disposal covers the scenario where we want to provide the client with an optional selection that is included by default in the estimate.
Optional Choices The soap dispenser combines the above features to offer an optional selection with alternatives that are not included by default in the estimate.

Note

Before we can implement any of the configurations, we will need a project specification to work on. The steps below will bring us to a point where we can begin creating Client Choices:

  1. Choose the project that you wish to work on from the Home page or use the project selection dropdown in the main menu.
  2. Use the main menu to navigate to the project's Specs page.
  3. From the Specs page, create a new specification with or choose an existing specification that you wish to modify.

Choices (Faucet)

In our scenario above, we want to set the Standard Model faucet as our default selection and then offer two alternative options for the client to choose from. To accomplish this, we will need a project already created.

Define The Default Budget Line

  1. From the Budgets section of a specification, click to begin creating a new budget line.
  2. Enter a description and cost for the budget line. We will use "Standard Model - Single Hole Faucet" as our description to stick with our scenario above.
  3. If desired, use "Choose Display Image" to upload an image to display with the budget line.

Add The Client Choice(s)

The steps above teach us how to create our required default budget line. The following steps teach us how to add our Client Choice(s):

  1. Before saving the default budget line, click to bring up a modal window allowing us to create our choice.
  2. Just like any other budget line, we will enter our description and cost. We will use "Budget Model - Single Hole Faucet" as our description to stick with our scenario above.
  3. If desired, use "Choose Display Image" to upload an image for this Client Choice.
  4. At the top of the modal window, click
  5. Repeat steps 4-7 to add additional Client Choices. Sticking to our scenario above, we will follow the steps again using "High-End Model - Single Hole Faucet" as the description.
  6. When you are finished adding Client Choices click

Options (Garbage Disposal)

In our scenario above, we want to include a Garbage Disposal as an upgrade to our kitchen sink build.

  1. From the Budgets section of a specification, click to begin creating a new budget line.
  2. Enter a description and cost for the budget line. To stick with our scenario above, we will use "Garbage Disposal" as our description.
  3. If desired, use "Choose Display Image" to upload an image to display with the budget line.
  4. Select the checkbox labeled "Optional."
  5. When you are done editing the optional budget line click

Optional Choices (Soap Dispenser)

In our scenario above, we want to provide an option to include a counter mount soap dispenser in Stainless, Chrome, or Bronze.

We will follow the same steps as the faucet example above, but we will select the "Optional" field for the default budget line.

  1. From the Budgets section of a specification, click to begin creating a new budget line.
  2. Enter a description and cost for the budget line. We will use "Soap Dispenser - Stainless" as our description to stick with our scenario above.
  3. If desired, use "Choose Display Image" to upload an image to display with the budget line.
  4. Select the checkbox labeled "Optional."

Multiple New Optional Client Choices

Before saving, we will follow the same steps as the Choice (faucet) section above to add our Choice(s):

  1. Before saving the default budget line, click to bring up a modal window allowing us to create our choice.
  2. Just like any other budget line, we will enter our description and cost. To stick with our scenario above, we will enter "Soap Dispenser - Chrome" into our description.
  3. If desired, use "Choose Display Image" to upload an image for this Client Choice.
  4. At the top of the modal window, click "Save."
  5. And again, we will repeat steps 4-7 to add our bronze soap dispenser.

Wrapping Up

If you decided to follow the steps above with the given scenario, the Client Selections section of your project's Spec page should now look similar to the following:
